BTW's conversation with Fr. Steve Walter and Fr. Larry Tensi concludes with discussion of the Prayers after Communion and the Dismissal language. Emily and Bob are chided multiple times for coming to Mass late, and at one point Emily starts blurting out new Roman Missal responses at random. Hosts Bob Wurzelbacher and Emily Strand begin an interview with liturgical scholars and priests Fr. Larry Tensi and Fr. Steve Walter. What ensues is a fascinating look at the texts of the Roman Missal that are most altered in the new translation, and thoughts on how they enhance our praying at Mass. Also, Bob and Emily both confess to having been late to Ash Wednesday Mass and missing some important imagery in the new Opening Collect. Don't know what a "Collect" is? Bob and Emily conclude their interview with Fr. Tim Kallaher, scholar of Latin, on the people's new reponses in Mass. Why does Mass seem to start over in the middle? Which dialogue between priest and people is most like a chant at a sporting event? Does Emily really love poopy diapers? We answer these questions and more in Episode 13 of Beyond the Words. Episode 11 of BTW begins a series on the new responses for the assembly in Mass. Bob and Emily interview Fr. Tim Kallaher, pastor of St. John the Baptist parish (Dry Ridge, Cincinnati), and scholar of the Latin language. In this fascinating and informative episode, Fr. Tim sheds light on the meanings behind "And with your spirit," and breaks down the language of the Confiteor, which inspires a conversation about the so-called "emphasis on sin" in the new translation. Beyond the Words is back! Hosts Bob and Emily chat over coffee and Fritos (?) about how the transition to the new translation has gone, and talk with special guests Fr. Jerry Chinchar, SM (Campus Minister and Marianist priest), Will Marsh (UD student) and Jim Pera (UD Music Minister) about their perspectives on the change. This is BTW's most conversational (and slap-happiest) episode to date. |

The most musical of our musical episodes, the second half of BTW's interview with Fr. Geoff Drew and Jeremy Helmes has us listening to musical settings of the Mass recommended by the Archdiocesan Music Committee. As we listen, Fr. Geoff and Jeremy tell our listeners why these settings, both new and revised, made the Music Committee's short list. Musicians will geek out when Jeremy uses technical terms like "motif," "diatonic scale" and "dominant cadence." The rest of us will simply enjoy the great music and conversation in episode 9 of Beyond the Words. |
